About Teleos Training

Teleos Training  was set up by Phil and Barbara Miller in 2001. We deliver a wide range of development and management programs, mostly for the public and not-for-profit sectors. We also offer personal and business coaching and run accredited programs for other organisations.

From 2001–2008 Teleos managed the grant-giving section of a local community foundation, overseeing its growth from a budget of £45k to £500k+. This added to our, already huge, appreciation of local voluntary groups and what they contribute to society. It also gave us a wide insight into their needs, and the kind of training and support that will best help them to survive and thrive.

Background and Experience

We have lived and worked in East London and been involved in voluntary groups and not-for-profit organisations most of our lives. Between us we have over 30 years experience, both from a training aspect and as trustees and board members.

We understand the deep commitment that powers the best of not-for-profit organisations, but also the need for professionalism and growth in today’s world. We are committed to helping individuals and organisations identify and focus their vision, and to develop practical strategies to become the best that they can be.

We have long experience as trustees and board members ourselves. This enables us to see the needs of management boards both from the inside, as members, and from the outside, in our training and monitoring roles.

People

Phil Miller

Born in Canada, Phil pursued a teaching career before joining Springboard Housing in the 1970s. As Director of Personnel until 2000, he played a key role in Springboard’s development as a major housing-plus-care provider in London and Essex and was responsible for the development of a people-led strategy and the implementation of new policies for over 1000 staff.

Since setting up Teleos Training in 2001 Phil has worked with a wide range of local authorities and not-for-profit groups, specialising in trustee development and governance issues. More recently he has been involved in supporting companies and groups seeking to manage change.

Phil has been an active board member and Director for several local and regional charities and is currently chair of the Audit & Risk committee at MCCH, a large regional social care provider. He is also a long-time board member of a borough-based infrastructure organisation and has recently helped set up a charitable company for a faith community in East London, of which he is chairman.

A member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Phil holds an MSc in Human Resource Development and is registered with the Institute for Learning.

Barbara Miller

Barbara is a fully qualified trainer, Assessor and Internal Verifier and has wide experience of setting up and managing both accredited and non-accredited courses. Barbara graduated from Lancaster University and began her career as a maths teacher, but has worked with all ages, from nursery to adults, in a variety of subjects.

Barbara re-trained for the adult sector in 1998, specialising in ICT and Skills for Life, but quickly moved into using her experience to train other professionals, including school support staff, tutors, assessors and verifiers. Much of her career has been spent in project management, setting up and managing new courses, training staff and setting up workable systems. One of her key strengths is making qualification processes easy to understand and developing practical and user-friendly systems and materials.

Barbara is able to offer advice and practical support to organisations who are thinking of offering accredited training or who find themselves needing help with their current projects—also to individuals who would like support with their chosen qualification route. She has worked with all the major awarding bodies and is familiar with their requirements.

Since 2003 Barbara has worked largely with accredited vocational courses, including training and mentoring for tutors, assessors and IVs. Alongside Teleos’ work with charities and voluntary groups, she has a strong interest in the field of self development, mentoring and personal coaching. She is registered with the Institute for Learning.
