Career Consultancy
This offers a chance to talk through your study or career options in an informal setting but can also include practical help with things like CVs, application forms, personal statements and interview practice. We will take the time to talk to you properly and understand what’s really important for you. We’ll help you to talk about your skills and experience in ways that an employer will understand.
We can’t guarantee you’ll get the job you want but we can give you honest feedback about how an employer or interviewer will look at your application form, letter, email or CV. We’ll help you improve your presentation and give yourself the best chance possible.
- I’ve applied for I don’t know how many jobs but I don’t even get a response. What am I doing wrong?
- I’ve been in my job for years and I’m good at it but I feel stuck. What are my options?
- I’ve been at home bringing up the children and now I’m ready to do something for myself but I don’t know what. Should I study or go for a part time job, or even work for myself somehow?
- I do alright till I get to the interview and then I just dry up! I have all this stuff I want to say but they never seem to ask the right questions.
If these sound like the kind of things you’re saying to yourself then we can definitely help! Check out our CV and application first aid tips—or get in touch with us for personal help.
Mentoring
A mentor is someone more experienced in a particular field who can come alongside you and offer support and practical help from their own experience.
A mentor could help you in a variety of situations for example:
- You are training for a professional qualification and would like support and encouragement from someone who’s ‘been there and done it’ !
- You are new to your professional* role and would like practical advice and feedback on how best to succeed—or maybe just a sympathetic ear as you struggle with it!
- You have been in your profession for a while but feel left behind by new technology and new methods.
- You would like a fellow professional outside your situation to talk things over with confidentially.
*It’s probably worth noting that a ‘professional’ role can also be a voluntary one!
We offer mentoring in a variety of fields, but especially:
- Adult and work based learning: Tutors, trainers and candidates for NVQ and other competence based awards; child care and education, supporting teaching and learning, adult social care, health and safety; Mathematics and ICT.
- Quality monitoring: Assessors, Verifiers and Observers taking qualifications or wanting to update their A1,V1 and D awards to the new QCF standards. See also Quality Monitoring.
- Governance: Voluntary or paid board members, directors, trustees, chairs etc who are keen to understand and/or develop their role, both for their own satisfaction and to enable their organisations to becoming more effective. See also Governance Training.
Creating your own Mission Statement
People usually associate mission statements with big corporations, but did you know that you can have your own mission statement? Something that will sum up what you believe in and is important to you, what you want to accomplish in life.
There is great power in being able to put your vision into words. It helps to focus your thinking and gives you confidence.
It can help clarify your planning, particulalry if you find yourself at a crossroads in life. What are you really about? What do you really want out of life?
How is it different from a personal statement?
A personal statement is usually for a specific purpose – you include it on an application form to sum up why you are the best person for the job or why you are just the right person for a course! A mission statement goes deeper—it helps you decide whether you should even be applying for that job or course! A mission statement is about you as a person, what do you really hope to achieve, what is special for you, what your key concerns are.
